DIY Digital Marketing – when you can do it yourself

DIY digital marketing gives business owners the chance to flex their marketing muscles and try building a marketing strategy of their own.

When can you do DIY digital marketing, and when should you look for some professional help? Here are a few of the ways you can do DIY digital marketing successfully.

Post on social media

Social media is so important for your business. B2C and B2B businesses both need to have a presence on the social media platforms that your customers use. If your target audience can’t find you, they can’t buy from you.

Think about your target market.

  • Is it other businesses? You should definitely build a LinkedIn Company Page.
  • Young people? Get on Instagram.
  • News junkies? Start Tweeting.
  • Everyone else? Facebook is probably a good bet.

You don’t have to have a profile on EVERY social media platform out there but having a strong presence on at least one is a great start. This will give your audience a place to connect with you in a more tangible way than just looking at your website (which you’d better have too.) And social media posting is getting even easier thanks to scheduling software like Sprout Social and Hootsuite.

Write some content

Writing content for your website can be intimidating, but who better to tell the story of your company than you? One of the biggest pieces of advice that writers get is to write what they know, and you KNOW your business better than anyone else. No matter what business you’re in, you can find a story to tell about your business, products or customers.

The most important thing to remember when you’re writing content for a blog article or website page is to think about your audience. What do they care about? What do they find interesting? How can you make your business more relevant to their needs and wants?

One way to answer this question is by looking at search terms on Google. A free tool called Keyword Planner can help you discover what people in your target market are searching for on Google. Then you can use those search terms to create content that answers their questions – and will be found on the search engine. This is called Search Engine Optimization – click here to learn more about the process.

Writing your own content will also make posting on social media easier since you’ll have something to share!

Get on Google My Business

Google My Business is probably the best free DIY digital marketing tool that you aren’t using. The most visible part of Google My Business is the business listing that appears on the right-hand side of the search results page when you Google your business’s name. Activating your free Google My Business account will let you edit this information, respond to questions from customers, collect reviews, post pictures and share updates about your business.

You can even create a free basic website through the platform if you don’t have a website already. Though other free website building platforms have more options, this is certainly better than no web presence at all.
