The U.S. Cities Creating The Most White-Collar Jobs, 2016

Forbes.com researchers analyzed Bureau of Labor Statistics data to determine the cities creating the most jobs in the business and professional service sector. Nashville ranks No. 1, with business service employment growth of 47.2 percent since 2010 to 152,700 jobs, with 7.7 percent growth last year alone.

Nashville ranks as one of the best U.S. cities for retirement, according to a study conducted by Kiplinger. Researchers used data from Trulia to identify cities that offer green space, trails and walkability. The study also took into account cities with access to health care that are tax-friendly for retirees.

The Best and Most Improved Housing Markets in America

Nashville has the No. 1 metro housing market in the nation, according to a report published on livability.com. The ranking is based on Freddie Mac's Multi-Indicator Market Index, which includes the best and most improved housing markets across the U.S. Ranking No. 17 in the U.S., Tennessee’s housing market is the second-most improved in the survey.

The Best Cities for Retirement

Bankrate.com ranked the best and worst cities for retirement for more than 200 cities using the following criteria: cost of living; crime rate (violent and property crimes); walkability; health care quality; state and local tax burden; personal well-being for seniors; weather (temperature and precipitation); and the vitality of the local cultural scene. Franklin ranked No. 3 and Nashville came in sixth.

Nashville Ranked Fifth-best City in America

Nashville is rated the No. 5 city in the United States, according to the Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards 2016 readers’ survey announced today and available now on travelandleisure.com/worlds-best. The new survey from Time Inc.’s Travel + Leisure reveals the top travel destinations and companies in the U.S. and around the globe, from cities and islands to cruise lines, airlines, hotels and more. Cities are rated on sights/landmarks, culture, food, friendliness, shopping and value.

Nashville No. 2 Market for Growth of Highly Skilled Tech Workers

Nashville has the second-strongest tech talent growth rate in North America, according to CBRE Group, Inc.’s annual report, “Scoring Tech Talent,” which ranks 50 U.S. and Canadian markets according to their ability to attract and grow tech talent.

As the home of digital entertainment and music applications, the Nashville market has increased its tech tenant labor pool by 67.9 percent over the past five years.

“Nashville has a creative, highly educated workforce that is very attractive,” said Harrison Johnson, senior vice president of CBRE. “There is now significant investment in tech jobs, which we did not have 10 years ago."

Best States for Retirement

Tennessee placed fourth in Kiplinger’s new report, "10 Best States for Retirement in 2016." According to their analysis, every major metro area in the state has lower-than-average living costs — especially for health care and taxes, which are particularly important to seniors. Overall cost of living in Tennessee is 2 percent below the national average.

Small Business Friendliness

Tennessee earned an A+ for small business friendliness in Thumbtack.com's national survey of small business owners.

Since 2012, the Thumbtack Small Business Friendliness Survey has surveyed thousands of entrepreneurs on the state and local public policies that affect their ability to start, operate, and grow a business. In 2016, more than 12,000 U.S. small business owners participated in the study.

Top Cities for Employee Engagement

Market research and data firm Quantum Workplace surveyed more than 8,700 organizations in 47 cities across the United States and discovered which cities have the highest percentage of employees who feel truly professionally engaged in their workplaces. Nashville ranked sixth, with 71.2 percent employee engagement.

Top Cities for Startup Growth

Nashville was named as one of the top cities for startup growth, ranking No. 5 in a 2016 Kauffman Report, ahead of San Francisco and Boston.

The ranking marks a leap from 2015, when the city was No. 9.

The Kauffman report studied employment and revenue growth at companies in particular areas.

Top Cities for Creatives

Using job data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and cost-of-living information from the Council for Community and Economic Research, financial research website SmartAsset ranked the top 10 U.S. cities for creative workers. Nashville comes in ninth. This is the second year SmartAsset has conducted this research; Nashville also ranked in their 2015 list.

The new Graduate Opportunity Index, compiled by Trulia in partnership with LinkedIn, rates 40 of America’s strongest job markets based on what they have to offer recent college grads. The Nashville metro comes in seventh.

Davidson, Williamson among top 10 counties for wage growth

Davidson and Williamson counties are among national leaders for job growth, according to an article in the Wall Street Journal.

"But in places from Music City to the Chicago suburbs to the California coast, wages are growing much faster. Weekly wages grew 4 percent or better in 44 of the 342 U.S. counties with at least 75,000 jobs, according to Labor Department data released Wednesday. Wages in Davidson, Tenn., the county that includes Nashville, rose 5.5 percent. Pay in Williamson, Tenn., just to the south, rose 5.2 percent. Williamson led the country in job growth, with employment growing 6.5 percent."
