2020 Leadership Connect Class Meets with Milton Johnson to Discuss Community Involvement

The Leadership Connect class of 2020 kicked off their program year with an Orientation on Tuesday, January 7, 2020. The ten class members met with Chamber staff to learn more about the Chamber’s purpose to create economic prosperity by facilitating community leadership. Ralph Schulz, CEO and President of the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce, discussed the impact of the Leadership Connect program on the Nashville region. “This program was created to advance regional Chamber priorities by building a pipeline of committed small business leaders,” said Ralph Schulz. The goal is to create an elevated platform for small business owners to make the changes they want to see in the Nashville region. Enhancing the relevance and impact of small businesses in the Nashville community is a big initiative of the Nashville Area Chamber.

The class also had the opportunity to hear from Milton Johnson, retired Chamber board chairman, and a 36-year veteran of HCA Healthcare where he served as CEO from 2014-2018. Milton is an integral part of the Nashville community, not only in his support of his alma mater Belmont University, but also in his work with nonprofits. He served on the board of trustees for Belmont University and also serves on the board for United Way of Metropolitan Nashville. Milton addressed the class to discuss the importance of community involvement as it relates to small business owners in our region. Johnson also discussed his personal journey learning how to balance his career and professional responsibilities, while remaining an active contributor to his local community. He explained that being involved with a local committee or organization allowed him to better understand the intricate details of a successful and thriving city.

The orientation set the stage for the class as they begin to understand how they can be actively engaged in the community as small business owners in the Nashville region. The class will continue to meet with local CEOs that have made an impact in Nashville.
