Legislative Update - February 4, 2019

A snapshot of last week’s actions and a look ahead to this week

Relatively Quiet Week

Last week, the House and Senate were both at work after the recess each body took following the organizational session.  Most committees and subcommittees met, although nearly every meeting was for organizational purposes only.  While no substantive debates took place, there was some controversy on the hill after several House committee chairs indicated that committee members and visitors would be prohibited from recording and live streaming during committee meetings – story here

Filing Deadline for Legislation

Both the House and Senate have set filing deadlines this week for legislation.  The House deadline is the close of business on Wednesday, and the Senate deadline is the close of business on Thursday.  Future legislative updates will provide a link to all of the bills being tracked by the Chamber as well as an update on the status of each bill.

Legislation to Watch this Week

*HB0010 by Potts. (SB0034 by Gilmore.)

This bill would prohibit an employer from failing or refusing to recruit or interview a prospective employee in most situations based on that person's credit information, and it would create a private cause of action for those injured due to violations by employers.

Employers need full discretion when interviewing and hiring prospective employees, and this legislation places an unneeded burden on employers while also opening the door for frivolous and onerous lawsuits.  This bill is scheduled for a hearing at 3:00 tomorrow afternoon in the House Employee Affairs Subcommittee
