Pro-transit donations show wide support among diverse community members

The pro-transit PACs, Citizens for Greater Mobility and Nashville for Transit, have released fundraising disclosures that show 144 individuals and 81 businesses from a wide array of industries have donated a total of more than $2.5 million to the pro-transit campaign.

Contributions from individuals range from $1 to $100,000. While the individual contributions account for a relatively small percentage of the overall funds raised, they demonstrate that a wide variety of individuals in the Nashville community care enough about getting started on a transit plan to give their own money to support the campaign’s efforts. Most of the contributions were made online, through Transit For Nashville’s website. The pro-transit PACs have committed to publicly release the names of all their donors.

In contrast, the Tennessean reported that the anti-transit NoTax4Tracks PAC received $750,000 from “Nashville Smart Inc.,” a 501(c)4 nonprofit organization that is not required to release its contributors. The Nashville Smart Inc donation accounted for nearly 80 percent of the transit opposition’s fundraising total.

There are other ways to show your support beyond donations to a PAC or campaign. In an election that will most likely be decided by a relatively small number of votes, even though turnout has been record-breaking so far, your efforts in spreading the word and getting out the vote can make a huge impact on the outcome of the election.

To get involved in the campaign, visit TransitForNashville.com. There, you can see the volunteering options and show your support with a For Transit yard sign.
