Top 7 things you need to know about Nashville's transit plan

1. The plan is comprehensive, including buses, light rail, a downtown tunnel as well as improvements to sidewalks and intersections.

Nashville Business Journal: “If you start to build the plan the mayor has laid out, you build a much denser, workable Nashville.” Once Nashville has implemented this plan, other counties in the region can use Davidson County's example as a model for their own transit solutions.

2. You will start seeing the benefits in just a few months.

3. On the highest capacity routes, buses and trains will run 20 hours a day.

Also, buses and trains will arrive every 15 minutes on the highest capacity routes.

4. You’ll have real-time information and same-day reservations for AccessRide.

AccessRide is the MTA’s paratransit service, providing transit solutions for people with disabilities that are unable to use fixed-route buses. The proposed transit plan will make using this program much easier.

5. Most of the funding will come from a local sales tax, which will cost about 17 cents a day, or $5 a month.

According to an in-depth report by the Research Center within the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce, the tax burden on most Nashville residents will still be well below the median for all cities, even with transit surcharges. In fact, most funding will come from the sales tax increase, of which 47 percent is paid for by out of county visitors and commuters.

6. The plan includes free transit passes to people who are at or below the poverty level.

This will ensure that the people who most need access to public transit can benefit from the proposed improvements.
