Election day is May 1 – what is your voting plan?

Making a voting plan is the best way to ensure you get to the polls and cast your vote in the transit referendum and primary elections. In fact, making a voting plan increases your chances for turning out to vote.

Answering the follow questions will help you solidify your voting plan:

When will you vote?

Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and tend to be most crowded in the early morning and evening after work. To avoid waiting a long time to cast your ballot, consider going to vote in the mid-morning or afternoon.

In fact, Tennessee employers are required to provide 3 hours of time for you to vote, as long as your shift doesn’t begin 3 hours after voting begins or end 3 hours before voting ends. Don’t be afraid to take time off during work to vote!

Where will you vote?

Unlike early voting, your polling place on election day depends on the address at which you are registered to vote.  Find your polling place here.

Do you have the ID you need to vote?

Most voters will only need their Tennessee Driver's License to vote. Also, you do not need to bring your voter registration card.

You can also use any of the following forms of ID, even if they are expired:

  • U.S. Passport
  • Tennessee Department of Safety photo ID
  • U.S. Military photo ID (active or retired)
  • Tennessee Handgun Carry Permit with your photo
  • Photo ID issued by the Federal or Tennessee state government

If your ID is expired and you are a first-time voter in Davidson County, you can find other voter ID requirements here.

How will you get there?

Consider riding the bus to get to the polls! Did you know MTA has a route planner on their website? Find a route to the polls here.

Can you bring anyone else to the polls?

Ask your friends, family and coworkers to see if you can carpool and vote together. The vote for transit is anticipated to be a very close vote – encouraging your network to vote may be the difference between success or failure of the transit referendum.
