Chamber Members Share Insights for Small Business Saturday

With Small Business Saturday just around the corner, we asked a few of our members about the best things about doing business in Middle Tennessee, what they've learned about entrepreneurship, and the importance of supporting locally grown businesses. Here's what they said:

Sondra Noble – co-founder, Hip Hues
What’s the best part of being a small business owner in Middle Tennessee?

Middle Tennessee is a GREAT place to be right now with its booming economy, destination activities and venues, and a wonderful, vibrant, artistic and creative populace. Additionally, Nashvillians love to shop, hire and support local; we all have such pride in this city that we've curated and claimed as our own.

Becki Annastas – owner, Dream Events & Catering
What advice would you like to share with other small business owners?

One of the best decisions I have made in my business is to seek out like-minded business owners and companies. Leaders and companies I can learn from, partner with, and brainstorm creative solutions as we navigate business ownership together – including those you might see as competition. There is plenty of business for everyone. Working together makes your company, your industry and, ultimately, your community better.

Mignon Francois – founder, The Cupcake Collection
Why did you choose to start your own business?

I chose to start my business out of necessity. We were drowning in debt and brokenness. My business was the key that unlocked the opportunity for us to live the American dream.

Kerry Woo – owner, Kerry Woo Photography
What advice would you like to share with other small business owners?

When I first started my photography business four years ago, I sought out at least 12 successful entrepreneurs and asked each of them, "What's the one piece of wisdom you would give me in starting my business?" Answers varied from networking, accounting, branding, continual education and getting involved in the community by using my passion, time and talent as a photographer to make a difference in Nashville. It's true! In the multitude of many counselors, there is wisdom. I must add that the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce provides the platform to learn, observe, and engage with my love for Nashville. Besides the branding and continual education, membership in the Chamber is the best investment one could make for continual success in their business. It's a no-brainer.

Maggie Tucker – owner, magpies
What’s the best part of being a small business owner in Middle Tennessee?

Our community provides daily inspiration for the products we carry, and constant enthusiasm to keep our magpies team energized! There is a clear commitment from Nashvillians to support locally owned shops, and we are forever grateful to be surrounded by excitement for "shopping small!"
